Buying Kitchen Cabinets on the Internet
By Sue Holt and Larry Hamilton
When it was time for us to renovate our dowdy 70’s kitchen, my husband Larry and I began the project by researching carefully all of our options for buying kitchen cabinets. Like most folks, we wanted the best quality kitchen cabinet at the lowest possible price.

We began our quest for the perfect kitchen cabinet by searching our local sources. Our first frustration came while shopping at the big orange home center. Even with us doing all the design and planning ahead of time, we sat for three and a half hours with the “kitchen specialist,” before we were finally able to obtain a simple price quote. Later that day we drove down to the Mega-Buck kitchen design center where we ogled over their beautiful cabinets, but found them to be outrageously priced. As we left the parking lot that afternoon Larry turned to me and said “there’s got to be somewhere we can find kitchen cabinets that nice, but at a reasonable price.” We next tried a small local cabinet shop that, initially, promised us the world, and then totally dropped the ball as they never came through with any price quotes. Here we were ready to order cabinets right now, but not feeling comfortable with any of our options.

The next day Larry and I turned to the Internet in an attempt to find high quality custom kitchen cabinets at a reasonable price, and hopefully a company we would feel comfortable dealing with. Our experience shopping on the Internet in the past had been generally limited to small purchases such as books, CD’s and an occasional item of clothing. With as daunting as the task of buying cabinets seems anyway, how in the world would we be able to make a selection over the internet? At the time, we weren’t sure, but we decided to press on. Then we discovered Cabinetry Direct. With their well laid out web site, we found it easy to browse and shop for our kitchen cabinets, and even easier to obtain full and detailed pricing – all at the click of a mouse.

It took us just 30 minutes of comparing the numerous door styles and wood choices, cabinet and hardware specs, and we had ourselves a complete price quote for our new cabinets. At this point, we were pleased to discover how easy it was for us to tweak our kitchen design using the full pricing that is listed on-line. We would upgrade or downgrade various components of the whole project, like the door and drawer styles, the wood choice, the box make-up and even the drawer hardware, and were able to immediately see how it affected the bottom line. We soon settled upon a combination that we felt would give us the most kitchen for the money and the look that we desired.

Once our cabinets were priced out online, what next? Naturally, you want to see, in person, samples of doors and drawers, stains and finishes before you can commit to a big decision like this. With a simple phone call to Cabinetry Direct, we were immediately impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of the folks there. We were even happier when we were informed that we could have samples of different door styles, wood types and stains at our door in just two to three days.

Well, two days later as promised, we received the samples of the door and drawer styles we had requested. Our first impression was “wow,” these are very high-end quality custom kitchen cabinets with the rich, expensive finish we’ve been looking for. The combination of dealing with the folks at Cabinetry Direct and seeing and evaluating the doors and their finish first hand made us feel confident to take the next step and place the order for our cabinets.

The process of ordering our kitchen cabinets was over almost as quickly as it began. We faxed our drawings to Cabinetry Direct for review. From this, their designers drew up a computerized plan of our kitchen which they promptly faxed back to us. During a telephone conference about our kitchen, they made pertinent suggestions for cost saving as well as other helpful recommendations. With their guidance we were able to maximize the use of our unique space and enhance the workability of our design. For instance, we eliminated the need for any filler strips. The absence of fillers gives you more usable space, a cleaner look, and a truly custom installation.

Back on the phone with Cabinetry Direct. We double and triple checked our specs and measurements and made sure that all the doors and drawers on the cabinets would function properly without interfering with one another upon opening. We discovered this is an especially important consideration at inside corners and near range hoods.

By now, we were very comfortable with our plan, our choices and our dealings with the folks at Cabinetry Direct. Excitedly, we went ahead with our order for the cabinets. That evening I turned to Larry and said “Boy, we sure could have saved a lot of time and frustration if we’d only known about these guys earlier.”

We found that placing an order with Cabinetry Direct entailed a 50% down payment with 25% more due in a month and the balance due when the kitchen ships. We were told that it would be eight weeks before our kitchen would be ready to ship. Although we were paying someone who we now trusted through our dealings over the phone, but had never actually met in person, we decided to check with our credit card company just to get some basic information. We found out that if two months down the road we did not actually receive any cabinets, all we had to do was challenge the charge and we would not be liable. That’s reassuring to know and helpful to keep in mind with any major credit card purchase in the future. With our new kitchen finally on order, we turned our energies towards removing our old cruddy cabinets, and preparing the area for new.

Cabinet Delivery

As promised, all of our new kitchen
cabinets arrived on time and with
no damage. We were pleased with
how well every thing was packed
for safe shipping.

Since we’d gone this far without a local cabinet shop, we decided we would save even more money and install the new cabinets ourselves. We’d never done this before, but can tell you now that it’s not nearly as hard as you might think. Anyone with reasonable handyman skills and just some basic tools can install a kitchen. You’ll know you’re getting a good job, and will have even more pride in your new kitchen. Follow this link to our other article, “Installing Kitchen Cabinetry Yourself" and we’ll detail the simple steps that you need to take to install your own kitchen cabinets, plus show you a picture gallery of our finished kitchen.

The time passed quickly, as we were busy preparing for our new cabinets. As promised, our kitchen was shipped 8 weeks to the day after our order was placed. Upon arrival, we were pleased to see how well the kitchen cabinets were padded and packed for safe shipping. With great anticipation, we removed the careful packaging from each of the cabinets and were thrilled to see the rich glowing tones of the natural cherry we had chosen. In all honesty, these kitchen cabinets far exceeded our expectations. Thanks Cabinetry Direct for making our internet shopping experience for kitchen cabinets a pleasure.
